Katie’s Turning Point
Some conversations don’t feel like interviews. They feel like truth-telling. This episode with Katie Veneziale was one of them. You may know her from our earlier discussion on friendship and depression. This time, we talked about trusting your gut, pushing back when you’re dismissed, and refusing to settle for a life that isn’t working. On the surface, it’s a story about weight. Underneath, it’s about identity, advocating for yourself, and fighting for the future you know you deserve.
When Trying Isn’t Enough
When Katie and her husband began trying for a family, she already knew it might be hard. She had been told her whole life that pregnancy would be challenging. After six months of trying, a specialist told her she needed to lose 60 pounds before they would help her. No treatment. No options. Just another version of the same message she had heard since childhood: lose weight.
But Katie had spent her entire life doing the “right things” with sports, consistency, nutritionists, workouts, and endless tests. Nothing worked. Every appointment turned into a conversation about her body instead of her health. It was exhausting and confusing. Then, when infertility entered the picture, the weight wasn’t just a frustration; it became a roadblock to the one thing she always wanted: motherhood.
Finding Answers and Facing Reality
In 2016, worn down and out of options, she explored weight loss surgery. It wasn’t vanity. It was survival. During pre-op testing, she was finally diagnosed with PCOS and insulin resistance, the missing pieces that explained years of unexplained weight gain. The diagnosis brought relief and grief at the same time. At least now there was a reason.
She went through with the surgery. She lost weight. She stayed disciplined. And then, while preparing for infertility treatments, she got an unexpected call. She was pregnant. Against odds. Against predictions. Against everything she had been told.
Breaking Again, Rising Again
After two pregnancies, Katie found herself gaining weight even though she was maintaining the healthy habits she had built. When she returned to her doctor in 2023, she refused to be dismissed again. This time, her doctor listened. She suggested a medication, not as a magic fix but as support.
Katie remembers her doctor saying, “It’s time to take some of the load off you.” It was the first time a medical professional validated her struggle. And it changed everything.
In 16 months, with the same habits she had always had, she lost 120 pounds. Since beginning her journey, she has lost 190 in total. Not because she suddenly tried harder, but because she finally received the right care.
Let Them See You Struggle
Someone once told Katie, “Let them see you struggle. Because if they see you struggle and never quit, they will see you succeed.” She carries that with her. It’s why she is open about surgery, medication, PCOS, and all of it. It wasn’t quick. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t linear.
If you’re reading this and feel unheard, dismissed, or stuck, let this be your reminder:
You are allowed to ask more questions. You are allowed to get second opinions. You are allowed to advocate for yourself loudly.
Your struggle is not the end of your story. It is the part that proves how hard you are fighting for the life you know is possible.
